If you are installing tetex, so that you can use the TeX text formatting system without direct PDF compilation, consider to install tetex-dvips. In addition, you will need to install tetex-afm (for converting PostScript font description files), tetex-latex (a higher level formatting package which provides an easier-to-use interface for TeX), and tetex-xdvi (for previewing .dvi files in X). If you are installing TeX and you are not an expert at it, you should also install the tetex-doc package, which contains documentation for the TeX system.
The map files ptm8y.map phv8y.map pcr8y.map are just included for completeness. They are tuned just for dvips, so they should not be added to the updmap configuration. The relevant entries are included in a more flexible way in some "internal" configuration file of teTeX's updmap. Thomas Esser, Jan. 2003
