Mutter is the clutter-based evolution of Metacity, which, as the author says, is a "Boring window manager for the adult in you. Many window managers are like Marshmallow Froot Loops; Metacity is like Cheerios."

Mutter Compositor =================== Mutter includes a compositor based on Clutter. Mutter by default adds very simple effects using the compositor, such as a drop-shadow. Metacity is not a meta-City as in an urban center, but rather Meta-ness as in the state of being meta. i.e. metacity : meta as opacity : opaque.
