virtual filesystem to access archives, disk images, remote locations

This FUSE-base VFS (Virtual FileSystem) enables all programs to look inside archived or compressed files, or access remote files without recompiling the programs or changing the kernel.

At the moment it supports floppies, tar and gzip files, zip, bzip2, ar and rar files, ftp sessions, http, webdav, rsh/rcp, ssh/scp. Quite a few other handlers are implemented with the Midnight Commander's external FS.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There may be some bugs left in extfs. Enjoy.

Starting with version 3.1, the Midnight Commander comes with so called
extfs, which is one of the virtual filesystems. This system makes it
possible to create new virtual filesystems for the GNU MC very easily.

Such work has two basic steps:

avfs for Debian

To use this filesystem the user has to access to /dev/fuse and the fuse
utilities. On Debian this normally means that the user has to be part of the
group fuse.

The shared library hasn't been packaged so far because I don't know a single
application using it. This might change in the future.

Webdav support is disabled for the time being because it needs some more

May 2006 (updated)

This version of AVFS includes support for fuse (Filesystems
in userspace). The other versions of AVFS, preload, library,
and coda, do NOT have to be installed since they are not supported
by applications and are unsupported in kernels >2.6.x or
glibc > 2.1. Any user wishing to install the library may do so
but will have to write his/her own program interface to
