A parser generator that is compatible with YACC

Bison is a general-purpose parser generator that converts a grammar description for an LALR(1) context-free grammar into a C program to parse that grammar. Once you are proficient with Bison, you may use it to develop a wide range of language parsers, from those used in simple desk calculators to complex programming languages.

Bison is upward compatible with Yacc: all properly-written Yacc grammars ought to work with Bison with no change. Anyone familiar with Yacc should be able to use Bison with little trouble. Documentation of the program is in the bison-doc package.

* Skeletons
Bison skeletons: the general shapes of the different parser kinds,
that are specialized for specific grammars by the bison program.

Currently, the supported skeletons are:

- yacc.c
  It used to be named bison.simple: it corresponds to C Yacc
  compatible LALR(1) parsers.

  Produces a C++ parser class.

- lalr

This package contains the GNU Bison parser generator.

See the file INSTALL for generic compilation and installation instructions.

See the section FAQ in the documentation (doc/ for
frequently asked questions. The documentation is also available in
PDF and HTML, provided you have a recent version of Texinfo installed:
run "make pdf" or "make html".

Bison requires GNU m4 1.4.6 or late

Bison News

* Changes in version 2.4.1 (2008-12-11):

** In the GLR defines file, unexpanded M4 macros in the yylval and yylloc
   declarations have been fixed.

** Temporary hack for adding a semicolon to the user action.

  Bison used to prepend a trailing semicolon at the end of the user
  action for reductions. This allowed actions such as

    exp: exp "+" exp { $$ = $1 + $3 };
