STARTING:
xscan takes no command line arguments other than standard X command
line arguments (.i.e. -display is available).
SCANNING AN IMAGE:
Click the SCAN button to scan an image with the current settings.
Currently xscan saves the image as a tiff file. You will be shown a
file selector window, to enter a name to save the image in.
The menus are
IMAGE TYPE:
This selects what kind of image to create. By default it will scan a
color image. The menu items are
Color - 24 bit color image
Black and White - 8 bit gray-scale image
Halftone - 1 bit black and white image, with halftone processing
Line/Text - 1 bit black and white, with no halftone processing
DESTINATION:
This selects what kind of device the image is intended for. It just
changes the gamma correction and color correction to be appropriate
for the kind of device used to display the image. It is set to CRT by
default, for screen display.
RESOLUTION:
Select one of the available resolutions to scan at. It is set to
75dpi by default. Just a warning, scanning a full color image at
300dpi, with the full page selected, takes up approximately 24 megs. You
can go up to 2400dpi. To get a scanned image to display at its
actual size, select a resolution that is the same as the output
device. For example if you want to print the image on a 600 dpi
printer, set the resolution to 600dpi to get it at actual size.
(Question: when a printer prints at 600dpi, is that 600 dots per
square inch, or 600 dots in the x direction and 600 dots in the y
direction? In the case of the scanner it means the latter.)
ZOOM:
Use the slider to select a zoom factor. The current resolution is
multiplied by the zoom factor to get the actual resolution to scan at.
The default is 100%. You can use this in conjunction with resolution
to select the size at which an image is to display on a particular
device. For instance, setting the resolution to be the same as an
output device, and setting the zoom to 200%, would cause the image to
display at twice its actual size.
IMAGE PREVIEW:
On the right of the screen is an image preview. Click the Preview
button to display a preview of the image with the current settings.
SELECTING A REGION:
Hold down the left mouse button and drag to select a region of the
preview area. Now when you scan, only that region will be scanned.
Click the right mouse button anywhere in the preview area to make the
region go back to maximum size. The current dimensions of the region
are displayed in the Width and Height boxes, to the left of the
preview area. By default they are in inches, but you can select
centimeters as the unit also.
