- Sometimes a xxxx_t is not a long or int but, it is a 64 bit quantity. If
  you printf() that value with %d or %ld, only the MSB's will be printed 
  (m68k architecture). The i386 architecture will print LSB's perhaps and
  let this bug go unoticed. Therefore, always cast with printf() when
  types with an unknown size are in use.

- A very irritating bug surfaces when you want to read a dead link. When
  this happens lstat prints a line on stdout which is very annoying.

===============

   In order to compile and run the X-plorer, you must correctly compile
and install the Qt widget library which is available from Troll Tech at
'http://www.troll.no/'. Follow the instructions in INSTALL.qt and then
return to this file for further instructions.

Basic Installation
==================

   The `configure' shell script attempts to guess correct values for
various system-dependent variables used during compilation.  It uses
those values to create a `Makefile' in each directory of the package.
It may also create one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent
definitions.  Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that
you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, a file
`config.cache' that saves the results of its tests to speed up
reconfiguring, and a file `config.log' containing compiler output
(useful mainly for debugging `configure').

   If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try
to figure out how `configure' could check whether to do them, and mail
diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README' so they can
be considered for the next release.  If at some point `config.cache'

Compilers and Options
=====================

   Some systems require unusual options for compilation or linking that
the `configure' script does not know about.  You can give `configure'
initial values for variables by setting them in the environment.  Using
a Bourne-compatible shell, you can do that on the command line like

     CC=c89 CFLAGS=-O2 LIBS=-lposix ./configure

Or on systems that have the `env' program, you can do it like this:
     env CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include LDFLAGS=-s ./configure

   If you have gcc or g++ masqueraded as c++ but the library was built
with some other C++ compiler because of bugs in g++/ld/whatever, do:

Installation Names
==================

   By default, `make install' will install the package's files in
`/usr/local/bin', `/usr/local/man', etc.  You can specify an
installation prefix other than `/usr/local' by giving `configure' the
option `--prefix=PATH'.

   You can specify separate installation prefixes for
architecture-specific files and architecture-independent files.  If you
give `configure' the option `--exec-prefix=PATH', the package will use
PATH as the prefix for installing programs and libraries.
Documentation and other data files will still use the regular prefix.

   In addition, if you use an unusual directory layout you can give
options like `--bindir=PATH' to specify different values for particular
kinds of files.  Run `configure --help' for a list of the directories
you can set and what kinds of files go in them.

   If the package supports it, you can cause programs to be installed
with an extra prefix or suffix on their names by giving `configure' the
option `--program-prefix=PREFIX' or `--program-suffix=SUFFIX'.

Optional Features
=================

   Some packages pay attention to `--enable-FEATURE' options to
`configure', where FEATURE indicates an optional part of the package.
They may also pay attention to `--with-PACKAGE' options, where PACKAGE
is something like `gnu-as' or `x' (for the X Window System).  The
`README' should mention any `--enable-' and `--with-' options that the
package recognizes.

   For packages that use the X Window System, `configure' can usually
find the X include and library files automatically, but if it doesn't,
you can use the `configure' options `--x-includes=DIR' and
`--x-libraries=DIR' to specify their locations.

Specifying the System Type
==========================

   There may be some features `configure' can not figure out
automatically, but needs to determine by the type of host the package
will run on.  Usually `configure' can figure that out, but if it prints
a message saying it can not guess the host type, give it the
`--host=TYPE' option.  TYPE can either be a short name for the system
type, such as `sun4', or a canonical name with three fields:
     CPU-COMPANY-SYSTEM

See the file `config.sub' for the possible values of each field.  If
`config.sub' isn't included in this package, then this package doesn't
need to know the host type.

   If you are building compiler tools for cross-compiling, you can also
use the `--target=TYPE' option to select the type of system they will
produce code for and the `--build=TYPE' option to select the type of
system on which you are compiling the package.

Sharing Defaults
================

   If you want to set default values for `configure' scripts to share,
you can create a site shell script called `config.site' that gives
default values for variables like `CC', `cache_file', and `prefix'.
`configure' looks for `PREFIX/share/config.site' if it exists, then
`PREFIX/etc/config.site' if it exists.  Or, you can set the
`CONFIG_SITE' environment variable to the location of the site script.
A warning: not all `configure' scripts look for a site script.

Operation Controls
==================

   `configure' recognizes the following options to control how it
operates.

`--cache-file=FILE'
     Use and save the results of the tests in FILE instead of
     `./config.cache'.  Set FILE to `/dev/null' to disable caching, for
     debugging `configure'.

`--help'
     Print a summary of the options to `configure', and exit.

`--quiet'
`--silent'
`-q'
     Do not print messages saying which checks are being made.  To
     suppress all normal output, redirect it to `/dev/null' (any error
     messages will still be shown).

`--srcdir=DIR'
     Look for the package's source code in directory DIR.  Usually
     `configure' can determine that directory automatically.

`--version'
     Print the version of Autoconf used to generate the `configure'
     script, and exit.

`configure' also accepts some other, not widely useful, options.

    The qt/arch directory contains a Makefile which can create
    sub-directories for several platforms. Choose an architecture 
    and make it. Type "make list" to see all the alternatives.

	cd /usr/local/qt/arch
	make linux-gcc-shared
	cd linux-gcc-shared
	make

    If you cannot find your platform in arch/Makefile, read PORTING.

    You can delete all the directories below arch except the one you're
    using.

3b. To install the compiled library and moc:

	cd /usr/local/qt

	cd linux-gcc-shared
	make variables
	cd /usr/local/qt

4.  In very few cases you may need to run /sbin/ldconfig or something

then you might want to set a Style entry in your `.fvwm2rc95' .For example:

  Style "explorer" Icon mini-expl.xpm

A mini icon for the Explorer can be found in the directory `icons'
called `mini-expl.xpm'. Copy this icon to your bitmap or pixmap directory
so fvwm95 can find it. You might also want to add an entry in your start
menu. For example:

  + "explorer%mini-expl.xpm%"      Exec /usr/local/explorer/explorer &

A lot of things in the program can be changed. All icons you see are
just .bmp files which can be find in the `icons' directory. You are
free to change or alter them. We don't mind if you change the about
bitmap but, please leave the copyright statement and the Linux logo 
intact. 

If you do decide to change some icons, then remember that the size of
these images are fixed. You can change the contents and colors and such
but, not the size.

We've tried to keep the code as contained as possible, so it should 
not be difficult to remodel the data_tree code so that it can be
used as a standalone Qt widget (as of version 0.5 the Qt widgets are
more or less complete). If you remodel any of the source code or add
something to it then please notify us.

One final note, currently the X-Plorer does NOT compile under SunOS
or Solaris. The Qt library, however, HAS been successfully built under
both of these operating systems. We have limited access to both of these
platforms and it appeared that the compiler and libraries were out of
date. If anyone is successful at getting X-Plorer to compile under either
one of these platforms, please tell us and gives any bugs/fixes. Thanks.

 WARNING!!! The current version is 0.73 this means that all basic file
 operations are enabled. This also means that they might not always work.
 So be very carefull what you do!!!. We are NOT responsible if you
 accidentally damage your system in any way. The 0.73 version does NOT
 ask you if you want to copy/move/delete it will just do it, so be
 CAREFULL running it as root.

Although Microsoft is very strong in the design and visual
department, the stuff that really matters is unfortunately 
underdeveloped. This is also the case for the Windows95 Explorer.
Below are features that differ from the Win95 version to the 
*nux version we are developing.


- Operation consistency.

  In Windows95 the left mouse-button can have 2 different operations
  while dragging and dropping. This is by definition inconsistent.
  ( said the Vulcan ). When you drag and drop files/directories to a
  place on the same partition, the explorer assumes you want to move
  them. When you drag and drop files/directories to a different
  partition it assumes you want to copy.

  The X-plorer has dropped that inconsistency. The left mouse-button
  always means copying. You can move files with the right button. This
  gives you a pop-up in which you can also cancel the operation.

- Weird engineering.

  I found out that the Windows95 version does not do much checking before
  it tries to do a file operation. A good example of this is when you want
  to copy directories from the right view to the left tree-view. The Win95
  explorer does not notice if one of the directories is the same until
  it tries to copy/move it. 

  The X-plorer will see if there are some operations that are not
  logical, like the operation mentioned above. You then get a message
  box asking if you want to continue the operation and leave the offending
  directories/files out of the operation.

- This item is not an inconsistency but more a general difference.

  When you select multiple files in the file-list view and select 
  properties in the pop-up in Win95, explorer will let you modify
  the attributes of multiple files. 

  In the X-plorer this is impossible because each file can have
  different permissions. Besides, in our version the properties dialog 
  contains the filename of the entry. The X-plorer will detect a
  multiple selection and ask if you want to change the property of the
  entry you clicked on.

- Different views to the system. 

  When you look at the directory tree in the Win95 explorer you will notice
  that at the top of the tree is the desktop icon and contents. This 
  suggests that the Desktop is the root of the system.

  The X-plorer has a more UNIX like view of the system. It recognizes
  the root of the file-system as the place to start. It lists the system
  name (network name) and UNIX type as the root node of the tree.

I would like to point out a peculiar thing. I started work on the
X-plorer during the Christmas vacation of 1996. From then on it took Ruben
and myself 4 months ( not continuous but more sporadic ) to come to 
the writing of this file. This compared to the team of programmers at
Microsoft who took probably a bit longer to arrive at the same point but,
not with the necessary engineering quality ( see statements above ).

Oh well, just a personal ego boost.
